New York City settles with NSB client Andre Hatchett in false identification suit
In October 2017, NSB reached a $12.25 million settlement with the City of New York on behalf of client Andre Hatchett, who spent 25 years wrongfully imprisoned for a Brooklyn murder. Mr. Hatchett’s conviction was overturned in 2016 when the Conviction Review Unit of the Kings County District Attorney’s Office reviewed his case and unearthed medical records demonstrating that Mr. Hatchett could not have committed the crime.
As a result of NSB’s aggressive advocacy, Mr. Hatchett obtained early documentary evidence demonstrating that NYPD officers used improper tactics to convince two purported witnesses to falsely identify Mr. Hatchett as the perpetrator and then lied to cover up the police misconduct. The evidence of misconduct was so strong that the City of New York settled Mr. Hatchett’s suit at the early stages of discovery.
Mr. Hatchett is represented by NSB partners Barry Scheck, Nick Brustin, and Emma Freudenberger and fellow Amelia Green.
