NSB client Kirk Odom wins record award under D.C. Unjust Imprisonment Act

On February 27, a D.C. Superior Court judge ordered the District of Columbia to pay $9.2 million in damages to Kirk Odom under the District’s Unjust Imprisonment Act—the largest award issued under the Act, and one of the largest non-jury awards ever in a U.S. wrongful imprisonment case. The court rejected the District’s arguments that the suit was untimely because Mr. Odom had not filed within six months of his imprisonment, and that it should not have to pay Mr. Odom because, like nearly all criminal cases in the District of Columbia, the actual criminal prosecution was handled by the United States Attorney’s Office.
