Christina Matthias / Staff Attorney

Christina joined as a Staff Attorney with Neufeld Scheck Brustin Hoffmann & Freudenberger in 2021.

Prior to joining NSBHF Christina worked as an Associate at a boutique law firm in Philadelphia. In this role Christina defended Pennsylvania state and local governmental entities against attacks seeking to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, and represented habeas petitioners before the Third Circuit and the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. She was part of a team that secured her client’s release from prison after more than 20 years on a successful habeas petition that was upheld by the Third Circuit. Prior to that Christina clerked for the Honorable Michael M. Baylson of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and worked as a public defender at the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem, where she represented clients facing misdemeanor and felony charges in Manhattan Criminal Court.

Christina is a board member of the Philadelphia Bail Fund, a non-profit dedicated to ending cash bail in Philadelphia, and to providing bail assistance and other support to those subject to the current cash bail system. She is actively involved in the fight to end cash bail in Philadelphia and around the country.

Christina received her J.D. with Honors from the University of Chicago Law School, where she worked with the Federal Criminal Justice Clinic representing individuals accused of federal felonies. She was part of a team that pursued a selective prosecution/racial discrimination theory in defense of several clients facing charges related to phony stash house robbery schemes initiated by the government. That litigation ultimately saved several clients from hundreds of years of incarceration collectively, through dismissals and highly favorable plea deals, and led to an expanded right to discovery from law enforcement agencies for selective prosecution claims. During law school Christina interned at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia and the Federal Defender for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
